Sugarcane Juice and Dark Bread

During our cultural exchange, we tried some food from our partner country. Here we show you one essential from Tanzania and Germany each and how it was perceived.

Sugarcane

Sugarcane production in Tanzania began in the early 20th century, with the establishment of sugar estates in regions like Kilimanjaro and Morogoro.

It is commonly sold by street vendors and in local markets. Many people enjoy a glass of freshly squeezed sugarcane juice with a bit of lime and ginger as a way to cool down and quench their thirst.

Dark Bread

Dark Bread is a traditional aliment eaten a lot in Germany. The main ingredients are water, yeast and some cereals like spelt, rye and barley, which are added to make the bread more nutritious . Therefore, there is a big variety of bread types eaten every day.

It is considered a symbol of hospitality and is offered to guests as a welcoming.

Stefan: "This is a German Schwarzbrot. Usually we eat it at breakfast or dinner. At breakfast is usual prepared with some jam, marmalade, honey or Nutella. In the evening I like to add butter and put some cheese or tomato on it, other people eat it with meat. When I am going abroad the first thing I usually miss about Germany is our bread. Now I will hand it to my Tanzanian friend.“

Jackline: „Wow!! This is a German “Schwarzbrot” and I’m very excited to taste it maybe I could get some pieces and give the comment of how it tastes. It looks a little bit different, and its good. I can even start using it.

It's different from Tanzanians bread with different cereals. I wish to hear from my German friends about the main ingredients and how to prepare it“
